Tour Description and Highlights:

The Vatican Museums &the Sistine Chapel

Your first stop will be the Vatican Museums. Home to countless Popes, there are few more uplifting sights than this spiritually enrichening setting. The unmissable Sistine Chapel with its sublime “Last Judgment” by Michelangelo might be one, as this masterpiece draws crowds from far and wide.

Despite there being much on offer, everything is so well organized and explained that you will leave feeling educated and informed. Among the galleries of the Vatican Museums, you will enjoya special collection of mosaics, ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, as well as the magnificent Raphael Rooms; once the official residence of the Pope himself.

St. Peter’s Basilica

From the Sistine Chapel, you and your guide will continue onto the 16thcentury St. Peter’s Basilica, gaining access through a hidden door that only the privileged have access to. First admire Michelangelo’s “Pietà”, then take in other highlights that include the Pope’s tombs before finally setting your gaze on the towering Basilica. It is the largest of its kind in the world and guaranteed to amaze all who visit.

Just before ending your tour of the museums, you will enjoy the curved colonnades of the square before a brief sighting of the Pope’s Balcony.

The Fountains & Squares

Rome is famed for its eclectic array of fountains and squares; areas that the locals enjoyed on sweltering days. First, visit the Fontana Della Barcaccia and the Spanish Steps – two favourites amongst visitors. Then, move onto the Scalinata diTrinità dei Monti, which takes its name from the church on the top of the hill. From here, dive into the back streets in search of the Trevi Fountain – the largest and most spectacular of fountains that was built at the end of one of the aqueducts to provide water to the urbanites. To ensure a return to Rome, tourists are invited to toss a coin over their left shoulder and into the fountain’s waters.

The Pantheon

The final masterpiece to visit during the tour: The Pantheon. Immaculately preserved and seemingly just a few centuries old, it is difficult to believe that the structure was finished in AD 128 by Emperor Hadrian. In the square in front – a gathering place for locals – discover a decorative 16thcentury fountain sitting beneath the Egyptian obelisk.

Piazza Navone

Before returning home, guests are invited to see the Palazzo Madama, which houses the Italian Upper Chamber, prior to entering the Piazza Navone. This is one of the largest squares in the city, and popular among tourists for one primary reason: Bernini’s “Fountain of the Four Rivers.” Built to represent The Nile, The Ganges, The Danube and Rio de la Plata, the structure now sits amidst the artists who arrive to peddle their wares on a daily basis.
